How importing works

Four steps, and we do three of them.

You choose the car and approve the price. Everything from the auction floor to the DVLA is ours to sort out.

01

Tell us what you want

Give us the model, the spec and your budget. If you are not sure, describe how you will use the car and we will shortlist three options that fit.

02

We bid at auction

We watch the Japanese auctions daily, read the grading sheet on every car and bid only on ones that pass our own inspection. You approve the ceiling price before we bid.

03

Shipping and customs

We handle export paperwork, marine insurance, shipping and UK customs clearance. You get photographs at every stage and a fixed landed cost with no surprises.

04

Registered and ready

IVA where required, MOT, DVLA registration and number plates. The car is valeted, warranted for twelve months and delivered to your door.

Why Japan

Better cars, honestly graded.

Japanese cars lead a gentler life than ours and are sold through an auction system that grades every panel. That is the whole advantage.

Inspected before we bid

Every car is graded by the auction house and then checked again by our own agent in Japan. If the underside is not clean, we walk away.

Genuinely low mileage

Japanese owners drive far less than we do, and odometer tampering is a criminal offence policed at auction. What the clock says is what the car has done.

Rust-free by climate

Japan does not salt its roads. A twenty-year-old Japanese car routinely has a cleaner chassis than a five-year-old British one.

One fixed price

Our quote includes purchase, shipping, duty, VAT, IVA, MOT, registration and plates. The number we give you is the number you pay.

What our customers say

All reviews

I had been quoted eleven weeks by another importer. Motorized had the Alphard on a boat within a fortnight of me signing, and they sent photographs from the compound in Yokohama the same day. Registration and plates were sorted before I collected it.

DO
Daniel OkaforLeeds · Toyota Alphard Executive Lounge

First time importing anything and I was nervous about the paperwork. They walked me through IVA and the DVLA side properly, and the final invoice matched the quote to the penny. No surprise charges at all.

SW
Sarah WhitfieldBristol · Suzuki Jimny Sierra

They talked me out of the first car I wanted because the auction sheet showed accident repair. That cost them a sale that month and won them a customer for life. The R34 they found instead was worth the wait.

Common questions

Before you send it

The things almost everyone asks us at this point.

Six to eight weeks from winning the auction to the car sitting on your drive is typical. Shipping is about four to five weeks of that; the rest is customs, testing and registration.

Why import from Japan

The best used cars in the world are already three thousand miles away.

Japan has the strictest roadworthiness testing, the least corrosive climate and an auction system that grades every car honestly. We have spent seventeen years learning how to buy from it.

Our story

Started with one Skyline in a shipping container.

Motorized began in 2009 when our founder imported a single R33 for himself, spent four months untangling the paperwork and decided nobody else should have to. Seventeen years later we run a compound in Manchester, employ our own inspection agent in Nagoya and have registered more than six hundred and forty vehicles with the DVLA.

We are a small team and we sell fewer cars than we could, because we turn down anything with a suspect grading sheet. That is the whole business model. It is also why nearly half of our customers come back or send a friend.

The advantage

Four reasons a Japanese car is usually the better buy

None of this is marketing. It falls out of how the Japanese market is regulated.

Step by step

What actually happens after you say yes

Roughly six to eight weeks, and you hear from us at every stage.

No hidden costs

Where every pound of your quote goes

We itemise all of this on your quotation before you pay a penny.

Vehicle purchase at auctionPaid in yen at the live exchange rate. We show you the winning bid.
Japanese export and inland transportDeregistration, export certificate and transport to the port.
Shipping and marine insuranceRoughly £900 – £1,400 depending on port and vehicle size.
UK duty and VAT10% duty and 20% VAT on the landed value for most cars. Vehicles over 30 years old attract reduced rates.
IVA or MOTIVA for newer vehicles, MOT for those over ten years old.
DVLA registration and platesIncluding first registration fee and road tax set-up.
Our feeA single fixed fee, quoted upfront and never taken as a percentage of the car.

Vehicles more than thirty years old are classed as historic and attract 5% VAT with no duty, which is why a 1995 import can land for considerably less than a 2015 one.

Part exchange on my old car was handled the same day and the price was better than the online buyers. The EK9 arrived exactly as described, right down to the mark on the driver's seat bolster they had flagged.

Car is superb and the service was excellent throughout. Only reason for four stars is that delivery to Scotland took a week longer than quoted — they did knock the transport cost off without me asking.

Nobody in the UK sells a Crown, which is exactly why I went to an importer. It is ULEZ compliant, it is immaculate, and it cost less than a five-year-old German saloon with twice the miles.
